The percentage of contestants who answer it has HURT their generation is astounding! I would say close to 90% of the contestants state that social media has hurt their generation and contributed to the increase in mental health issues.
And it is not just the incessant online bullying that is causing the issues - although that is a HUGE issue that needs to be addressed. What I have found is it is also the constant comparison to other people online that triggers our insecurities and self doubt.
We have all done it.
Scrolling through Facebook or Instagram and watching the glamorous lives of our friends or family unfold in front of us while we sit in our pajamas on the couch wondering why our lives cannot be like that.
We start to feel sorry for ourselves because we are not achieving those same successes or meeting those same goals.
The doubt begins to set in.
The darkness surrounds us.
And the depression becomes real.
Now let's talk reality.
Reality is NOT what you see on social media.
Because social media is one sided and biased.
You only see what others WANT you to see.
And for many on social media sites - what you see is often exaggerated and sometimes not even very truthful.
I suppose we have all been guilty of it at one time or another.
We don't mean to be deceptive.
When something good happens in our lives - OF COURSE we want to share it with the world!
And when something good happens in our friends lives - OF COURSE we want them to share it with us!
So why then cannot the same be true when we are struggling?
Why is it so difficult to just be real on social media and share our vulnerabilities?
It is - after all - what makes us all human.
Yet social media is filled with those "perfect pictures".
You know - the ones you look at constantly and try not to compare yourself to (or is that just me?)
The reality?
That "candid" picture took hours to take with editing and filters and countless retakes.
I have seen influencers in the wild trying to film "spontaneous" content - for the hundredth time - and it is actually quite fun to watch. Now I am not hating on influencers (although I do despise that term) - but I just think if you are going to film a situation as being "real" - it needs to be real.
I am certainly not innocent of trying to portray that "perfect" life.
I grew up in a family where we didn't talk about anything.
Nothing.
Got a problem? Sweep it under the rug.
Family has a history of mental health issues?
Avoid the subject at all costs. Suffer in silence.
Heaven forbid the outside world think we are less than perfect.
I spent years trying to be that "perfect" person and it almost took my life.
So forgive me now if I want to take those silly pics.
I find the greatest joy in taking amazing candids showcasing REAL personality and REAL emotions.
"Why so serious?" has become my motto.
I want my social media page to always showcase REAL LIFE because we all need to know we have got this and we are not alone.
Sometimes the struggle is real because I become guilty of what I am preaching against - I start comparing my life to what I see online and I fail in comparison.
But here is the reality.
We are each beautifully and wonderfully made and we each have unique qualities given to us by our Creator.
Stop comparing yourself to images that you see online.
Because those images never tell the whole story.
Life is good.
Life is bad.
And sometimes life is very ugly.
And it's okay to experience each one of those emotions!
Even if you don't see it online!
Because THAT is real life!
And we are all here for it!
Now go be your amazing self!!
You've got this!!
